Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy
EMDR in Melbourne and Australia-Wide via Telehealth
What is a EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing is an evidence-based psychological therapy widely recognised for its effectiveness in treating trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), eating disorders, depression, anxiety and a range of other difficulties. Endorsed by the World Health Organisation and the Australian Psychological Society, EMDR is a structured approach delivered by trained mental health professionals in accordance with Australian ethical and legal standards.
It is designed to help individuals safely process and overcome distressing memories, experiences, or symptoms related to trauma, anxiety, grief, or other adverse life events. Sessions incorporate bilateral stimulation—commonly eye movements or taps—while recalling specific memories, enabling the brain to reprocess these experiences and and incorporate adaptive information so they become less distressing.

What happens during EMDR Therapy?
EMDR therapy uses a standardised protocol, including:
Background History: To helps us understand your background and identify targets to work on
Preparation: Teaching grounding strategies to help keep you feeling safe.
Assessment: Selecting the experiences that you want to work on and determining if they’re appropriate for EMDR Therapy.
Desensitisation: Applying bilateral stimulation while focusing on the memory, reducing emotional intensity.
Installation, Body Scan, Closure, and Re-evaluation: Strengthening adaptive beliefs, checking for residual distress, and ensuring therapeutic progress. We’ll check in on the memories/experiences that have been processed in the following session.
