What is a WPATH Assessment?

A WPATH Assessment is an assessment under the informed consent model that seeks to establish that a person is able to agree to a gender-affirming medical intervention (e.g., hormones or surgery). This involves having an understanding of gender, our own gender, the risks and benefits of a particular gender-affirming medical intervention, the absence of other factors that may be impacting on a person’s experience, and the ability to consider all relevant information freely to consent to the chosen form of gender-affirmation

What isn’t a WPATH Assessment?

A WPATH Assessment is not an assessment of a person’s gender, or it’s validity. No-one apart from the person in question is appropriately qualified to validate their identity.

What should I expect of a WPATH Assessment with Howearth Psychology?

The number of sessions needed for WPATH Assessments with Howearth Psychology varies with each person. We believe in minimising barriers to care alongside meeting our professional and ethical obligations.

The assessment process involves the completion of wellbeing and gender related questionnaires, and discussions that seek to identify that a person:

  1. understands their gender;
  2. experiences gender incongruence;
  3. has no other factors significantly influencing their experience of gender incongruence;
  4. has appropriate management in place for mental health difficulties that may impact on their decision making or adjustment to/recovery from the procedure;
  5. that a person has the appropriate resources and supports in place to undertake their chosen gender-affirming medical intervention and manage any likely difficulties relating to the procedure, adjustment or recovery;
  6. understands the risks and difficulties that may be associated with their chosen gender-affirmation, and is able to manage these
  7. understands the benefits that may be associated with their chosen gender-affirmation;
  8. is able to consider the risks and benefits appropriately and make an informed decision regarding proceeding with their chosen gender-affirming medical intervention.
